All RPGs require players to spend time leveling their characters in one way or another. Whether it is an entirely skill-based system where characters only advance in the skills they use the most to a level-based one where players accrue generic experience which is then used to give them levels, the relationship between time-spent and level/skill earned remains the same. Even experienced the game veterans find that it can be a long and tedious process to level up a character, imagine what it must feel like for a new player!
