This is a brief overview of tradeskilling in EQ2. Tradeskillers make items that adventurers use, and it is possible to be a tradeskiller only, and never level as an adventurer, if you want to.

Many players have characters that are low level adventurers who are high level crafters - choosing to level only one or two adventurers.

The 3 classes of Tradeskill are Scholar, Outfitter and Craftsman. All classes start as Artisans to level 10 when they are asked to pick a class.

Once you level to 20, you choose again (a subclass). These are:

If you chose scholar, you will chose from Sage, Alchemist, or Jeweler.

A Sage makes all priest and mage spells (apprentice IV and Adept 3). An Alchemist makes all Fighter spells as well as potions that increase abilities and poisons that scouts can put on their weapons to create more damage. Jewelers make Scout spells as well as jewelry items that increase abilities and statistics.

If you chose Outfitter, you'll choose between Armorer, Weaponsmith and Tailor.

An armorer makes handcrafted plate and chain items as well as shields. These have in a lot of cases, better statistics than game dropped armor, and often similar to quested pieces. Warriors and Crusaders wear Plate armor, Scouts and Shamans wear chain.

A Tailor makes leather and cloth armor. Brawlers wear leather, as do Druid priests. Cloth armor is worn by all mages.

A weaponsmith makes all metal weapons.

If you choose Craftsman, you will then choose between Carpenter, Woodworker and Provisioner.

Carpenters make house items, some which are highly prized. They also make the new deity altars at higher levels from dropped recipes.

Woodworkers make weapons of wood - staffs, wands, and some shields (Bucklers and round shields). They also make totems, items that have limited charges but increase player abilities for a short time.

Provisioners make food and drink - items which allow an adventurer to regenerate health and power faster ..which means more adventuring!

All crafters are good choices. There are many posts in the official forums that address which one is the best choice for the adventurer you have chosen.
