| The Zionites are the freed humans who live in the city of Zion. They are the ones who live outside the matrix. As the only remaining free humans they see it as their responsibility to make all other humans see the real world. They are the ones who will initially train new operatives. |

| The Machines are the ones behind the creation and ongoing maintenance of the matrix. They are considered to be the most powerful in the size of their forces, requiring other factions to resort to guerrilla warfare and underhanded tactics. |

| The Exiles are old programs that have rebelled against the Machines, mostly due to a desire to exist. They are unique in that they do not have any presence in the real world. They do however control the passage between the matrix and the real world. The Exiles are akin to a criminal organisation, and are treated as such by the other two factions. |
